Electronic Vaccines Intelligence Network (eVIN) is the best global project of the Health Ministry implemented in the country and proved its effectiveness too. Out of the 12 states where eVIN implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Chhattisgarh becomes the first state to achieve 18 successive ‘zero stock-out’ days.
This program is a boon for the state governments striving to achieve their immunization goals. This program is a smartphone-based vaccine logistics system, and providing the real-time report on stock and flow and storage temperatures across all cold chain points in implemented states, is becoming a game changer in the nation’s ambitious Universal Immunisation Programme which aims at increasing coverage to 90 percent by the end of this year.
In India, the average birth rate is 26 million children in every year, and about 25 percent of them are not vaccinated properly as their guardians did not feel the requirement for it. And 15 percent of the parents did not have time to go to vaccination centers.
Due to real-time information, the cases of overstocking and stock-outs of vaccines will not happen frequently at storage centers across the country. Out of stock and overstocking happens very frequently before the implementation of eVIN system.
This project proved its effectiveness with good results. Recently, Gujarat became the first state to report zero stock-out of any vaccines across all its 1,998 vaccine stores. The success of the programme at implemented states made the government expand the initiative to the entire country. The system works on the basis of color codes system, that gives information to the health workers keep track of vaccine availability.
The eVIN project helps facilitate evidence-based decision-making by making available online real-time data through the application software and temperature loggers. It aims to ensure that every child gets the timely and reliable vaccination.
This also ensures the supply is safe and secure as the system providing real-time data on stock and flow and storage temperatures across all cold chain points in these states.
