Thane: In a shocking incident, the Maharashtra Crime Branch seized cough syrup from a building in Thane district and arrested one in the case. This is the second such incident in the last three months, as in August this year police had seized cough syrups from Thane.
The agency suggested that four thousand cough syrup bottles were illegally stored in a building in Bhiwandi which have now been seized by the department. The syrups seized from a room below the staircase are worth Rs 5.70 lakh, said the agency. The raids were initiated in a building in Gauripada area on October 21, acting on a tip-off.
The seized cough syrups meant for sale fall under the category of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act. Further investigations are underway in the matter and more details are believed to be uncovered in the time to come.
In August this year, Maharashtra Police, in a similar raid, seized a stock of cough syrups from Maharashtra’s Thane district. Acting on a tip-off, the Police’s anti-narcotics cell (ANC) raided a flat in the Shilphata area and seized 1611 bottles of two cough syrup variants. The offence was registered under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and the Drugs and Cosmetics Act 1940. The flat owners did not possess any license permitting them to store cough syrups.
In both the aforementioned cases, the motive behind storing such a huge quantity of cough syrups is yet to be ascertained.
More details awaited…
