PUDUCHERRY: A Puducherry court sentenced a quack to seven years of rigorous imprisonment after a woman patient he ‘treated’ died in the Union territory.
Third additional district judge M Elavarasan also sentenced the quack, identified as Jothi, 55 of Emblem, to five years of rigorous imprisonment for cheating and forgery. Both terms will run concurrently.
The judge imposed a penalty of Rs 25,000 on him for causing death by negligence and Rs 10,000 for cheating and forgery.
According to prosecutor N Vinayagam, Jothi did not possess any valid medical education but had been running a clinic and practising allopathic medicine in the same locality for several years. A sick woman approached him for treatment on March 29, 2012. He administered her an injection and gave her glucose drips.
The Mangalam police registered a case against Jothi and arrested him.
