New Delhi: The Chief Guest, Prof. Yogesh Singh, Vice Chancellor, University of Delhi at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital’s 68th Foundation’s Day (April 13) again stressed the obvious that the iconic hospital is the best healthcare model in India. Prof Singh only reiterated what distinguished guests on this occasion year after year have been observing. Their wish, though, that this model should be emulated by all hospitals throughout India is a leap of faith that seems impossible to attain in this age of healthcare domain being embroiled in profiteering and crass commercialism.
That Sir Ganga Ram hospital is epitome of all good values that an ideal hospital should imbibe is a truism without even a shade of doubt. The path of the hospital from its inception to date is paved with unique medical philanthropy. Trust members and valued doctors have filled well the large shoe that late Sir Ganga Ram, the iconic philanthropist left. The trust society and board of management is fiercely guarding his legacy of selfless service.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Yogesh Singh said, “I have seen this hospital very closely as a patient, attendant and visitor. I am pleasantly surprised and happy to know that all consultants of this hospital contribute 20% of their earnings back to the hospital. It needs real dedication and commitment to run good healthcare institutions like Sir Ganga Ram Hospital. I request all healthcare institutions to show kindness, passion and goodness towards poor who are the neglected part of today.”
Prof. Singh further added, “Contribution and growth of healthcare and education sector is most important in development of India’s GDP. I firmly believe a unique modal of Sir Ganga Ram Hospital should be replicated all over India. Open more branches to serve patients all over India. Replication and expansion of Sir Ganga Ram Hospital is the need of the day.”
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. D.S. Rana, Chairman, Sir Ganga Ram Trust Society said, “I am proud to say that our hospital apart from producing talented faculty for its own use is also a nursery for providing talented doctors for delivering health care services across the country. All over India doctors trained from Sir Ganga Ram Hospital are working successfully in various capacities.”
Reading the Annual Hospital ReportDr. Jayashree Sood, Hony. Secretary, Board of Management& Member Sir Ganga Ram Trust Society said, “Sir Ganga Ram Hospital firmly believes in helping the poor and it continues to carry the legacy and ethos of charity promoted by its founder.In 2022-2023, hospital had incurred cost of Rs. 43.50 crores in rendering free treatment to poor patients of which 25.70 crores was for EWS patients and Rs. 17.80 crores for other poor patients.”
Speaking on the occasion Dr. Ajay Swaroop, Chairman, Board of Management, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital said, “We are very particular in selecting talented consultants at junior level. We also provide lively and vibrant environment for the growth of young consultants and these consultants attain eminence in their respective fields by the time they occupy senior positions. However at the same time we continue lateral entry of eminent consultants from India and abroad”
Speaking further Dr. Swaroop said, “Unique doctor friendly and family atmosphere by the Board of Management consisting of eminent consultants provides the atmosphere of stability. For good doctors at tertiary care hospital, apart from state of art infrastructure for delivery of health care, academics and research are also very important components. The celebrations started today morning by garlanding the statue of Sir Ganga Ram, founder of the hospital. Later in the day, Prof. Yogesh Singh distributed Meritorious and Long Service Awards to staff and doctors of the hospital. A cultural program was presented by students of School of Nursing.Dr. D.S. Mrs. Sujata Sharma, Vice Chairman, Sir Ganga Ram Trust Society paid tributes to Sir Ganga Ram (1851-1927) and Dr. Ajay Swaroop, Chairman, Board of Management, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital read the Hospital Report.
Sir Ganga Ram was an engineer by profession who was born on 13th April 1851 at a village Mangtanwala of Punjab Province in British India, in present-day Pakistan. He graduated from Thompson College of Civil Engineering in 1873. In 1921, he established Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in Lahore which still functions by the same name and is a 500 bedded hospital attached to Fatima Jinnah Medical College. He expired on 10th of July 1927 in London. Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi was inaugurated in 1954 by then Prime Minister of India, Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru and is today 800 bedded multi-speciality, tertiary care hospital.
