Two separate seizures help The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) to seize 1,16,600 bottles of cough linctus containing codeine phosphate valued at about Rs.1.76 crore into the North East. These two big successes directly busted a big racket in smuggling of cough syrups and these syrups brought to this region to export illegally to Bangladesh, where it sells like a hot cake as it is banned in that region also.

A truck near CRPF Jeolcherra camp recently intercepted by the DRI as an act on intelligence and recovered 53,600 bottles of Phensedyl cough Linctus, concealed under 90 bags. The bottles were seized under the provisions of NDPS Act. The total seizure value of the case is around Rs. 81.33 lakh, according to the release.

Subsequently, with the assistance of BSF, the DRI intercepted another truck on the Silchar-Agartala Road and recovered 40,500 bottles of Phensedyl cough Linctus and 22,400 bottles of ESKUF Cough syrup, were concealed in bags. The bottles were seized under the provisions of NDPS Act, 1985.

The major concern about the news is that smugglers crossed a number of checkpoints easily and came in notice at the North East part. Other things not revealed yet like from where the bottles are coming from and under which company name.
