No doctors, man (45) dies; government seals private hospital

Ghaziabad:  The health department has suspended the licence of a private hospital in Loni after a 45-year-old patient died on April 13.

After the patient’s family accused the hospital of negligence, a health team conducted a surprise inspection. Officials said they had received several complaints that patients were being treated at Rati Hospital without a doctor present.

Health department official Dr Davi Lal, who led the inspection, said the team found several violations at the hospital. “The premises were very unclean, there was no segregation of biomedical waste, and the hygiene of the labour room was not maintained properly,” he said.

The team also found that there was no doctor present on the premises at the time of the inspection. Further, the 15-bed hospital was only issued licence for OPD, IPD and general surgery, but was operating maternal wards without any permit or any registered doctors.

There were two patients, a woman who had given birth at the hospital a few days ago and another patient was admitted to the emergency ward. “There was no doctor on duty available at the hospital. The patients said they were treated only by the nurses. The department will not allow such practices,” Lal said.

The hospital was found to not be following prescribed standards, and many discrepancies were identified in their documentation. “Due to these serious negligence, the health department has sealed the operation theatre and labour room of the hospital, and the hospital’s licence has been temporarily suspended,” the official said.

He went on to add, “All types of medical services will remain closed in the hospital till the investigation is completed. The health department has started a detailed and in-depth investigation of the case.”

The hospital management has declined to comment on the matter. Currently, there are 299 registered private hospitals in the district.
