UT man duped of Rs 1.4 lakh in fake Patanjali treatment scam

Chandigarh:  A Sector 35 resident alleged that an unknown person duped him of Rs 1.4 lakh on the pretext of providing medical treatment at Patanjali Yogpeeth, Haridwar, for his father. On his complaint, the cyber cell police registered a case against unknown persons and started a probe. No arrest has been made in the case so far.

In the complaint, Mahinder Pal Singh Chopra from Sector 35, said that after filling out a form for Patanjali Yogpeeth, he received calls from two different numbers. He was requested to pay Rs 45,500, which he transferred via GPay to their specified account.

The scammers then demanded an additional Rs 24,500 for medical examinations on June 5, 2024, which he remitted. They subsequently requested Rs 70,000 more to be deposited in a separate account, assuring reimbursement. After complying with this request, he later realised that he had been cheated.

A total of Rs 1,40,000 was transferred from his HDFC bank account to the different accounts provided by the cheaters. Later, he filed a complaint at the cyber police station in Sector 17, and after verifying the facts, police registered a case against unknown persons and have been scrutinising the accounts into which money was transferred by the victim.
