Three drug smugglers arrested in South Salmara-Mankachar

Guwahati: In an intensified crackdown on drug trafficking, Mankachar police arrested three drug smugglers in separate operations on Sunday night in Assam’s South Salmara-Mankachar district, seizing Yaba tablets and suspected heroin.

In the first operation, two individuals—Ahmed Hussain (35) and Idrish Ali (18) of Chomrashali village—were arrested at the Mirjumla checkpoint under Mankachar Police Station. Acting on reliable intelligence, police intercepted a motorcycle and recovered five packets of Yaba tablets weighing 123 grams.

“They were on their way from Chomrashali to Mankachar to smuggle the Yaba tablets when they were intercepted,” said a police official.

Seized items from the operation include 123 grams of Yaba tablets (in five packets), one motorcycle, two mobile handsets, and cash amounting to Rs 3,220.

In another operation, police apprehended Rabibul Islam (22) during a naka checking at Mirkamari and recovered 12 grams of suspected heroin from his possession.

“Based on credible input about heroin being smuggled from Kukurmara towards Mankachar, we launched an operation and set up a naka. During checking, we recovered a soap case containing heroin. The co-accused, Saif Hussain, managed to escape during the search,” said Dipak Bargayari, Officer-in-Charge of Mankachar Police Station.

All narcotics and related items have been seized following due procedure. FIRs have been registered, and investigations are ongoing.

Police officials confirmed that a major anti-drug drive is underway in South Salmara-Mankachar, with multiple arrests and large drug seizures reported in recent weeks.
