Operation Vajra: CBN thwarts Global Syndicate, seizes 12 Crore ‘Fighter Drug’ Tablets destined for Conflict Zones

NEW DELHI: In a major victory for India’s national security and anti-narcotics apparatus, the Central Bureau of Narcotics (CBN), operating under the Department of Revenue, Ministry of Finance, has dismantled an international drug trafficking racket. Executed under the codename “Operation Vajra,” the multi-agency operation successfully intercepted a massive export consignment containing 120 million (12 crore) high-strength Tramadol Hydrochloride (250 mg) tablets, weighing approximately 30 metric tons (30,000 kg), from a secret logistics warehouse in New Delhi.

Tramadol, a synthetic opioid popularly dubbed the “fighter drug” due to its widespread abuse by armed militias and terror networks to suppress pain and physical fatigue in war zones, carries severe addiction risks. The intercepted 250 mg dosage represents a dangerously high formulation, far exceeding standard clinical limits.

1. Multi-State Intercept: How Operation Vajra Unfolded

Carried out between July 10 and July 20, 2026, by specialized preventive units from the CBN Gwalior headquarters, the operation relied on close intelligence coordination with the Bengaluru zone of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI).

Law enforcement intelligence initially revealed that the consignment—officially declared as a legitimate medical export bound for the West African nation of Guinea-Bissau—was actually engineered to be illegally diverted mid-transit to active combat zones in Libya. When the shipment was passed through the CBN’s automated, risk-based export control mechanism, multiple operational anomalies triggered a deeper investigative audit.

Working alongside the International Narcotics Control Board (INCB) and competent state authorities in Guinea-Bissau, Indian investigators conclusively proved that the declared point of delivery was entirely fraudulent, uncovering a deliberate attempt to misrepresent export documentation and fuel international illicit opioid pipelines.

2. Masterminds Arrested in Kochi and Bengaluru

Following the physical seizure of the 30-ton drug cache in Delhi, enforcement teams tracked the operational paper trail back to the conspiracy’s core handlers. Sustained technical surveillance established that the primary financiers and logistics orchestrators were operating out of Kerala.

Despite sophisticated attempts by the syndicate to evade law enforcement by frequently shifting locations, CBN preventive teams launched synchronized raids across Karnataka and Kerala:

First Capture: A key operative managing local logistics was arrested in Bengaluru.
Kochi Raids: Sustained intelligence gathering culminated in the apprehension of the remaining two primary conspirators from Kochi.

All three accused individuals have been remanded to judicial custody and charged under the stringent provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.

3. Strengthening Global Security and ‘Nasha Mukt Bharat’

The successful execution of “Operation Vajra” highlights the strength of India’s regulatory frameworks and intelligence-led border controls. By stopping 12 crore synthetic opioid tablets before they reached international maritime channels, the CBN prevented a massive influx of illicit drugs into active conflict zones.

Department of Revenue officials emphasized that the operation reflects India’s firm commitment to international counter-narcotics treaties and aligns with the Union Government’s vision of a Nasha Mukt Bharat (Addiction-Free India), ensuring that domestic pharmaceutical manufacturing capacities are safeguarded against exploitation by transnational crime syndicates. Further financial inquiries and international asset-tracing proceedings remain actively in progress.
