Story of Bariatric Surgery Joining One Family’s Battle Against Severe Obesity

Four Members, including a 13-Year-Old, Underwent Iconic Procedure in Sir Ganga Ram Hospital

New Delhi: The family was in vice like grip of morbid obesity and all four members gasped for breath. All of them underwent weight loss and life saving bariatric surgery in Sir Ganga Ram one by one. The youngest member of the obesity clan, 13- year-old-boy who went last under the knife weighed 186 KG. His father, mother and uncle had already undergone the iconic procedure here.

The boy underwent this surgery in August last and has already shed 20 KG weight in just hardly two months! Obviously, all preceding members undergoing the procedure must have similarly found this surgery quite rewarding. So, you might call this family a Bariatric family if you will.

Sir Ganga Ram Hospital’s Department of Laparoscopic, Laser & General Surgery successfully performed a laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (also called bariatric surgery) on a youngest member with severe obesity and associated health concerns.

The young patient had experienced progressive weight gain over the years, reaching approximately 186 kg, and was experiencing breathlessness, joint pain, backache, increased snoring, sleep apnea, disturbed sleep, and anger-related behavioural issues. Despite attempts to manage his weight through dietary restrictions and lifestyle modifications, he could not achieve adequate, sustained weight loss.

Talking to Medicare News on phone, Dr. Tarun Mittal, Consultant, Department of Laparoscopic, Laser & General Surgery, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, who led the surgical care, said, ‘First his father, then mother and then again his uncle all suffering from the same morbid obesity had already bariatric surgery in Sir Ganga Ram. This family history may indicate a familial or genetic contribution to his obesity, alongside environmental and lifestyle factors.

Following a comprehensive evaluation and detailed assessment by a multidisciplinary medical team, bariatric surgery was considered as part of the patient’s overall management plan. The laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy was performed on August 13, 2026.

Following the procedure, the patient’s diet was gradually advanced under medical supervision. He has since lost more than 20 kg, with the family reporting improvements in breathing, snoring, sleep quality, mobility, and joint discomfort.

The medical team expects the patient’s weight to continue reducing progressively over the next 12 to 18 months. The long-term outcome will depend on adherence to dietary recommendations, physical activity, nutritional support, and regular medical follow-up.

The hospital team has emphasized that bariatric surgery in children and adolescents requires careful patient selection, comprehensive medical and nutritional evaluation, involvement of parents or guardians, and long-term multidisciplinary follow-up. Continued nutritional counselling, lifestyle modification, and regular monitoring remain important components of postoperative care.

The patient will continue to be monitored by the Surgical, paediatrics, and Chest Medicine teams as advised.

Dr Tarun Mittal said, ‘Bariatric surgery is a long tested only effective intervention in morbid obesity. It is not only a weight loss but also a life- saving surgery. This surgery in a obese person with uncontrolled diabetes is life- saving.’
