Every 5th Indian in the age group of 20-30 years is suffering from spinal problems. A decade ago, such concerns were mostly reported by senior citizens. Change in lifestyle, weight gain & lack of proper diet and protein are the major contributing causes for severe neck and back pain amongst young adults.Back pain is one of the most common health problems affecting a large number of people worldwide. Consistent back pain can be quite uncomfortable and debilitating and can interfere with one’s daily activities.A report published on The World Spine Day 2017 Insights Reportindicates that 20% of the young population in the bracket of 16-34 age group are treated for back and spine conditions.

Dr.Manoj Khanal, Principal Consultant & Unit Head, Dept. Of Neurology Max Super Speciality Hospital, Shalimar Bagh, New Delhi, said,“Our spine is made up of multiple small bones, inter-vertebral discs that act as shock absorbers. Due to continuous stress and misuse, the discs start drying up in the lower spine which bears the load, and weakens the back. Further pressure can cause rupture to the discs or pinch the spinal cords nerve, and can cause severe pain shooting down the leg. All this can be avoided by making healthy yet crucial lifestyle changes.”

Adding more on the problem of migrane,Dr Manoj Khannal said,“Migraine builds up gradually and grows into a severe pain that may affect one side or both the sides of the brain. It is a pulsating/throbbing kind of pain that increases in intensity. It may or may not be accompanied with nausea and vomiting. The patient feels uneasy in bright light and loud sound. Migrane can be prevented as well as treated. Medicines on a daily basis can help treat the disease. Besides, lifestyle management is also essential. Avoiding fermented foods and others that trigger migraine is recommended”.
