A Selfless Legacy: Donated Organs bring New Life and Hope to Many

New Delhi:  In a poignant demonstration of altruism, Mrs. M’s posthumous organ donation has given the gift of life to multiple individuals, creating a ripple of hope and healing. Mrs. M, a benefactor of humanity, had pledged her organs, with the heartfelt consent of her family, to aid those in need.

Her legacy of generosity has truly turned her into an angel for those fortunate souls who have received the incredible gifts of life. This successful tale of cadaver organ donation unfolds as a testament to the compassion and selflessness that thrive even in the face of loss.

In accordance with NOTTO guidelines, during kidney harvests, one kidney is contributed to the common pool and allocated by NOTTO. Mrs. M’s altruism saw one kidney reaching a recipient at Fortis Gurgaon, while the other found a home in a 41-year-old woman battling kidney disease for the past 11 years at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital. This selfless act has bestowed a precious lease of life upon her. Both recipients are currently on the path to recovery.

Mrs. M’s liver became a catalyst of transformation for a 38 year old man grappling with advanced liver cirrhosis. Compounded by the impact on his kidneys, his struggle was evident, requiring bi-weekly tapping. a liver transplant stood as his final lifeline. Thanks to the benevolence of Mrs. M and her family, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital orchestrated the life-saving transplant, under Dr Ushast Dhir ushering the recipient into a realm of renewed possibilities. The recipient is now on the path to recovery.

Her Corneas are stored at the Cornea Bank waiting to open up the world for its recipients.

Delhi’s First Bilateral Hands Transplant: Sir Ganga Ram Hospital also undertook North India first Bilateral Hands transplantation when Mrs. M’s hands were transplanted to Rahul ( name changed) 45/M a resident of Nangloi , Delhi who had lost both his hands in a tragic accident while crossing a Railway Track in October 2020. In an unprecedented feat for the region, a painstakingly long operation lasting more than 12 hours was undertaken to transplant the two arms from Mrs. M to Rahul.

The surgical process, a first of its kind in Delhi, was nothing short of extraordinary. A dedicated team of surgeons led by Dr. Mahesh Mangal HOD collaborated tirelessly to execute this intricate procedure, delicately reattaching various components, including bones, arteries, veins, tendons, muscles, nerves, and skin. Precision and expertise was the key, ensuring the seamless integration of the transplanted hands into Rahul’s body. Talking to Medicare News, Dr. Mahesh Mangal, Chairman, and Senior Consultant, Department of Plastic Surgery said, ‘the first in North India claim was unwittingly made because we did not know about the hands transplant being done by a hospital  in Faridabad, nor did they made it public. Our first in Delhi claim stands.’

According to  Dr. A.K. Bhalla Hony. Secretary Board of Management and Head of Department, Nephrology at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital ‘This woman who received one of the kidneys was on dialysis for the last 11 years, Mrs. M’s gracious act even after death infused a ray of hope for a bright future in her, she can now look forward to a normal life ‘.

According to Dr. Ajay Swaroop, Chairman Board of Management ‘ This the  3rd instance of Cadaver donation at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in the last one year and we hope that many more kind and generous individuals and families would come forward pledging their organs so that their loved ones continue to be alive in a way through others’.
