The Central Crime Branch (CCB) has registered a case after a pharmaceutical company complained that counterfeit versions of its popular face wash were being sold online using its name, manufacturing licence number and packaging details.
The complaint was lodged by Sridhar Kumar Shetty, managing director of Nemus Pharmaceuticals Pvt. Ltd. The company’s head office is located in BTM Layout and operates a cosmetic manufacturing unit at Belur Industrial Area in Dharwad. The unit has a manufacturing licence issued by the Karnataka Drugs Control Authority.
According to the complaint, the company recently came across a counterfeit SLC face wash purchased by a customer through an e-commerce portal. The product was allegedly being sold through a seller account name. The counterfeit product carried batch number SLFW/26H005. The company said the batch number does not exist in its manufacturing records and that the colour, font, design and overall packaging were markedly different from the genuine product.
The company also raised concerns over consumer safety, stating that the chemical composition and quality of the counterfeit cosmetic were unknown and could potentially cause harm to consumers’ skin and health.
The case has been registered under Sections 318(4), 61(2), 336(3) and 340(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. The CCB is investigating the source and distribution network of the counterfeit products.
