Doctor, nurse removed after 2 maternal deaths in Jodhpur

Jodhpur: A new mother died Friday after being referred from the Govt Sub-District Hospital in Bhopalgarh to Ummed Hospital in Jodhpur district headquarters following complications during childbirth, prompting the medical department to shunt out a doctor and a nursing officer and place them under awaiting-posting-order status.

The deceased woman, identified as Kiran, a resident of Diyawadi village of Nagaur district, was brought to the Bhopalgarh hospital for delivery Wednesday evening. She gave birth through vaginal delivery Thursday morning, but developed severe bleeding shortly afterwards. As her condition deteriorated, she was referred to the govt-run Ummed Hospital in Jodhpur, where she died Friday of alleged excessive bleeding.

This was the second such case reported from the Bhopalgarh Govt Sub-District Hospital within six days. Last Saturday, another pregnant woman from Gotan in Nagaur district was brought to the hospital with labour pain. She too was referred to Ummed Hospital, when her condition worsened during treatment. She is believed to have suffered heavy bleeding on the way and died shortly after reaching the Jodhpur hospital last Sunday.

Following the deaths of the two women, Jodhpur-II chief medical and health officer Jitendra Singh Charan ordered an inquiry and removed doctor Ratan Kanwar and nursing officer Prem Bhati with immediate effect.

“A departmental committee has been constituted to investigate the deaths, and its report is awaited,” said Charan. The scrutiny of maternal healthcare services in the state has intensified, especially following a string of maternal fatalities.

In previous months, five new mothers died in govt hospitals in Kota, and two others lost their lives in Bikaner due to kidney-related complications following caesarean deliveries. On June 20, another alarming incident occurred at the Paota District Hospital in Jodhpur, where the condition of eight new mothers deteriorated after caesarean-section deliveries.

While most of them recovered and were discharged, one remains in critical condition at AIIMS, Jodhpur. The Rajasthan govt formed multiple probe committees in response to these incidents, over which the World Health Organisation has also sought a comprehensive report from the Central govt.
