ICMR approves Mylab’s Covid-19 self-testing kit CoviSelf, issues home testing advisory

Named CoviSelf (PathoCatch), the indigenously developed test has been designed for home testing and is advisable only for symptomatic individuals and people who came in contact with lab-tested Covid positive patients, stated the advisory issued by Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) for Covid-19 home testing using the RAT kit.

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) on Wednesday approved self-use Rapid Antigen Test for Covid-19 developed by molecular diagnostics company.

The list of advisory noted that Individuals who test positive may be considered as true positives and all symptomatic individuals who test negative must get tested by RTPCR as RATs are likely to miss few positive cases presenting with a low viral load.

All users are advised to click a picture of the test strip after completing the test procedure with the same mobile phone which has been used for downloading the mobile app and user registration.

Data in the app of your mobile phone will be centrally captured in a secure server which is connected with the ICMR Covid-19 testing portal, where all data will be eventually stored, the advisory further added.

Pune- based company said that the mid-nasal swab test will provide test results in 15 minutes.

According to the manufacturer, the self-use rapid test will not only help in faster testing and diagnosis of covid suspects but will also play a critical role in reducing the spread of the infection as people who test positive can quickly take all isolation and treatment measures faster.

Commenting on the approval, Mylab’s managing director Hasmukh Rawal said, “This is the biggest crisis our country has ever faced. Time and again, we have tried to observe what our country needs and developed solutions with social benefit at the core. With CoviSelf, we are sharing the power of testing early with the citizens. It will save thousands of lives. For India, we will make millions of kits available at a fraction of the cost of such kits in the US.”

In an exclusive interaction with ETHealthworld, Mylab’s Clinical Director Gautam Wankhede explained that individuals above 2 years of age can be tested through CoviSelf but the test should ideally be conducted by individuals over 18 years of age.

“Most western countries have allowed self-test for their citizens and consider it as a powerful tool to break the chain. This easy-to-use test combines with Mylab’s AI-powered mobile app so that a user can know his/her positive status, submit the result to ICMR directly for traceability, and also know what to do next in either case of result,” said the clinical director.

According to him, the biggest challenge that we face is the magnitude of testing for a country of the size of India and by letting people do their own tests that volume issue can be handled. “We are sure this small step will be a big leap in mitigating the second wave,” he added.

The kit will contain all testing materials, a visual instructions leaflet, a QR code link to watch the video, and a biohazard bag to safely dispose of after testing.
