Inter-State drug racket busted; five arrested

A trail of clues stretching across multiple States and linking one suspect to another led to the arrest of five persons involved in an inter-State drug trafficking racket, the police said on Wednesday.

The operation resulted in the recovery of 51.5 kg of ganja, over ₹1 lakh in cash, and a car allegedly used to transport the consignment.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Raja Banthia said a police team conducted a raid on November 25 at Kamal Vihar in Burari and arrested Jitender alias Jitu for selling ganja. Police also recovered over 6 kg of ganja from his possession. A case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act was registered at the Burari police station, and a probe was initiated.

During interrogation, Mr. Jitender revealed that he purchased ganja from multiple suppliers, including Anil, Sabita Devi and Ram Kumar. Acting on this input, the police raided Swaroop Nagar in north Delhi on November 26 and arrested Ms. Devi, 50, with 1.5 kg of ganja. She told the police that she sourced the drug from her brother-in-law, Mr. Anil, who resides in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh.

Using technical surveillance, the police traced another supplier, Ram Kumar, 52, a resident of Patna. He was apprehended in Faridabad, Haryana, while allegedly delivering a consignment to his associate Brijpal, 30, who was also held, and the car used in transporting the drugs was seized. Over 30 kg of ganja was recovered from the duo.

Mr. Kumar disclosed that he and his associate Arun Roy, 40, both from Bihar, had been sourcing ganja from Tripura for the past year and supplying it to various buyers across Delhi and the NCR. Based on the information, the police arrested Mr. Roy on December 2 in Noida and over 13 kg of ganja was recovered.

“All five accused are in judicial custody. A probe is underway to trace others involved in the racket,” said the DCP.
