Sir Ganga Ram Hospital is all set to make birthing a pleasurable experience. The hospital has started classes to make expectant mothers aware of such options.
Pregnancy is of course a divine blessing that brings happiness to the family but labour pain can be distressing. As there are safe options to make birthing a painless pleasure, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital is all set to make mothers walk through the painless prospect and create awareness about it which is at its lowest compared to the western world.
Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, renowned for its best obstetric facility in the country, will regularly be holding antenatal classes to make expectant mothers aware of the options of painless birthing. The first class was held on February 15 and will be a regular affair on 15th of every month. Dr Ajay Swaroop, Chairman, Board of Management, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital inaugurated the event and was graced by Dr S P Byotra, Vice Chairman; Dr Jayashree Sood, Hony. Secretary; Dr Anil Kumar Bhalla, Hony. Joint Secretary cum Treasurer, Board of Management, Dr K Gujral: Head of Department, Obstetrics & Gynaecology and Dr Anjeleena Kumar Gupta: Senior Consultant Anaesthesiologist.
The ‘Introductory antenatal class’ for expectant mothers was organized by the anesthesiologists of the Institute of Anesthesiology, Pain and Preoperative Medicine, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital under the able guidance of Dr Jayashree Sood at the Auditorium.
The class underlined that in today’s era, many safe options of pain relief during labour can be offered by the anesthesiologist who is ‘the peripartum physician’. According to a recent study the awareness of these options in India is only 11% as opposed to 90% in western world. The motivation to adopt these options is often lacking in our society.. It was attended by a large number of expectant mothers along with their partners.
The normal process of labour was apprised by Dr Sharmistha Garg, Obstetrician and Gynaecologist. Dr Anjeleena Kumar Gupta, Anaesthesiologist highlighted the importance of pain-free birthing including the different options available for the same. It was assured that painless delivery by an epidural is safe for the mother and child and makes the delivery a pleasurable and joyful experience. Two patients shared their pain-free birthing experience who used epidural pain relief during their labour. The importance of physical therapy for a pregnant female and the dietary modifications were addressed respectively by Dr Indu, Physiotherapist and Ms Vandana Verma, Head Dietician at the hospital. The lactational support counsellor, Miss Priya Gandhi aptly covered the correct way of breastfeeding a newborn.
Lastly, the essential things that need to be packed on the way to the hospital were discussed by the nursing officer, Sarita John. The main focus of the programme was to cater to the specific needs of pregnancy and labour under one roof and make the couple feel more confident about the process of labour and childbirth as labour approaches and provide awareness to make delivery, pain free and memorable.
