Russian PCR equipment maker DNA Technology plans first overseas factory in Uttar Pradesh

The company is looking for a site of about 10,000 square metres and has opened talks with Invest UP, according to a company executive.

Greater Noida: DNA Technology, a Russian maker of molecular diagnostic equipment and reagents, is in advanced talks to set up a manufacturing unit in Uttar Pradesh that would be its first production facility outside Russia, a company representative told Moneycontrol.

Sergey Labutin, head of the company’s international sales department, said on the sidelines of the Uttar Pradesh International Trade Show that the firm is searching for a site of around 10,000 square metres. That is roughly half the size of its manufacturing footprint in Russia, which exceeds 20,000 square metres. The planned unit would produce diagnostic equipment and reagents locally, according to the report.

The company has begun negotiations with Invest UP and is assessing possible locations for the plant. Labutin said the team plans to visit the medical park to inspect space, and described Uttar Pradesh and the Noida region as offering significant potential for its manufacturing plans.

The state is developing a 350-acre Medical Device Park near the upcoming Noida International Airport. The park is meant to draw manufacturers of medical devices, diagnostics and precision-engineered products and includes common testing infrastructure, the report said.

DNA Technology already has a branch and business operations in India but does not manufacture in the country. Founded in 1993, it develops and makes polymerase chain reaction (PCR) equipment, diagnostic reagent kits and laboratory solutions. Local production would allow it to participate more deeply in the Make in India programme, according to the company representative.

The company’s India plans have gathered pace in recent months. An Indian delegation visited its production facility in July, and the firm took part in the first INNOPROM industrial exhibition held in India earlier in September, the report said.

Labutin said the size of the Indian market was a key reason for weighing local manufacturing, adding that a sizeable production base in the country could help the company grow its wider international business as well as its Indian operations. “We consider India as a big market for us,” he said.
