The Indian Air Force airlifted the retrieved organs to Delhi from Command Hospital, Chandimandir, where the 62-year-old donor was declared brain dead.
New Delhi: Vardhman Mahavir Medical College (VMMC) and Safdarjung Hospital has carried out its first dual kidney transplant, placing both kidneys from a single deceased donor into one recipient on Tuesday, the hospital said.
The donor, a 62-year-old man, was declared brain dead at Command Hospital in Chandimandir, and his family consented to the donation of his organs, according to the hospital. Because of his age and other medical factors, doctors classified him as a marginal donor.
With an organ from such a donor, a single kidney may not give the recipient the clinical benefit that is needed, the hospital said. Given the shortage of organs available for transplant, the team decided to place both kidneys in one patient so that the donation could be used as fully as possible.
The surgery was led by Dr Pawan Vasudeva, Director Professor and Head of the Department of Urology and Renal Transplant. He was joined by Dr Niraj Kumar, Dr Sandeep Kumar and Dr Gaurav Vashisht, according to the hospital.
The programme ran under the leadership of Director Dr Kavita Sharma, while Medical Superintendent Dr Charu Bamba provided institutional guidance for what the hospital described as a complex procedure involving several departments.
The Western Command of the Indian Air Force flew the retrieved organs to Delhi. Both kidneys were sent to Safdarjung Hospital, while the donor’s liver was allocated to the Army Hospital (Research and Referral) in New Delhi, the hospital said.
The hospital did not disclose the identity or age of the recipient, or the patient’s condition after surgery. The procedure was reported as a step forward for the institution’s renal transplant programme, which is run by its urology department.
