20 days old boy underwent surgery to remove an Underdeveloped fetus

A rarest of the rare case found at a private hospital in Ahmedabad where 20 days old boy had a huge swelling in his abdominal area and during the examination, it was found that the boy had been suffering from a rare medical condition called retroperitoneal mature teratoma or fetus in fetu.


A boy had 750 grams underdeveloped fetus in his abdomen and was underwent surgery for removal at a private hospital. The parents of the boy are from Sanand town in Ahmedabad. Boy gets discharged and is recovering rapidly.

Simply this condition results when the presence of one of the twins in the body of the other.In this case, an underdeveloped fetus is found in the abdomen of another infant. The probability is very low and the condition occurs one in five lakh cases. Around 200 such cases have been recorded in medical history.

Bhavin Vasavada, consultant gastrointestinal hepatobiliary and liver transplant surgeon told that the CT scan was showing the rare condition after the reports, a team of doctors decided to operate the baby. This case is rarest as the mature teratoma at the retroperitoneal location is also a rare condition. On operating the baby, a mature teratoma (underdeveloped fetus) was removed which had an undeveloped hand and some parts of the spine.

The baby was hospitalized for around a week before being discharged.
