PCIM&H Soon To Develop Pharmacopoeia Standards For Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani & Homoeopathy Drugs

New Delhi : The Pharmacopoeia Commission of Indian Medicine and Homoeopathy (PCIM&H) may soon undertake development of pharmacopoeia standards for the Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani and Homoeopathy drugs under the ‘One Herb One Standard’ (OHOS) among other initiatives during the financial year 2023-24.

The Ministry of Ayush is also actively considering bringing of a legislation for regulation of Yoga and Naturopathy and a legislation for the Ayush Pharmacy and Allied Healthcare Professions, the ministry informed a Parliamentary panel.

The Ministry informed the Department Related Parliamentary Standing Committee on Health and Family Welfare that it is proposed to undertake various initiatives during the year 2023-24 including development of research and treatment infrastructure among other initiatives.

“During 2023-24, PCIM&H would undertake development of Pharmacopoeial standards of ASU&H drugs under “One Herb One Standard” and their publication, development of a Web portal for selling of soft copies of Pharmacopoeial Monographs as per GIGW (Guidelines for Indian Government Websites), publication of Single drugs/revised Monographs and formulations received under EoI (Expression of Interest) scheme of PCIM&H, development of CRM & BRS, NABL – ISO/IEC/17025:2018 Accreditation, the NABL accreditation of chemistry and microbiology laboratory, implementation of Integrated Management System (IMS) Certification and development of herbal garden in 10 Acre land,” the Ministry informed the panel.

To a specific query of the panel about the status of the Ayush Pharmacy and Allied Healthcare Professions and Yoga & Naturopathy Bill, the Ministry has informed that the matter relating to bringing of the legislation for regulation of Yoga and Naturopathy, and legislation for the Ayush Pharmacy and Allied Healthcare Professions are actively being considered by the Ministry.

It has also informed that this intended legislation will improve the access to quality and affordable education of Yoga and Naturopathy in the country which in turn will ensure availability of adequate and high quality professions of yoga and naturopathy in the country. The regulation will also encourage the professionals of Yoga and Naturopathy to adopt latest research in their work and also to contribute to research.

“The Committee is of the considered view that the proposed legislations on Yoga & Naturopathy and Ayush Pharmacy, and Allied Healthcare Professions would play a pivotal role in the regulation of Ayush Industry and Professions and Yoga & Naturopathy. Keeping in view the rising popularity of the Ayush systems the proposed legislations are need of the hour. The Committee, therefore, recommends the Ministry to expedite the process of introducing of proposed legislation in the Parliament,” said the panel headed by Member of Parliament Bhubaneswar Kalita, in its report on Demands for Grants of the Ministry of Ayush for the year 2023-24.

The Committee added that it is of the firm view that Naturopathy and yoga, being a non- pharmacological system of medicine, can be well integrated with modern systems of medicine for almost all diseases from common cold to cancer.

From 2023-24 onwards, the National Institute of Siddha would undertake projects on college building and hostel building to accommodate the Undergraduate students. During 2023- 24 the National Institute of Naturopathy (NIN), Pune, will start a functional Nisarg Gram Project – an extension of NIN, with 250 Bedded Hospital, Medical College, Research Unit and Living Gandhi Memorial.

The Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga (MDNIY) would start the diploma in yoga therapy and diploma in sport coaching in (Yogasan) for one year duration. The Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy would undertake evidence based studies on modern parameters, public health policy, economic and operational research studies, collaborate with other institutes for basic research study and disease for national health importance and develop research centres as centres of excellence and also develop consortium, added the Ministry.
