Surat: Police Seize 2195 Bottles Of Ayurvedic Syrup During Raids, 7 Arrested

Surat:  After six individuals lost their lives in Gujarat’s Kheda district after consuming an ayurvedic syrup, the police on Friday raided seven places in the city, and seized 2195 bottles, news agency ANI reported. In media briefing, Special Operation Group of Surat Police’s DCP Rajdeep Nakum stated that the police has arrested seven people in the case so far.

“After the incident of the deaths of six people due to the drinking of ayurvedic syrup in Kheda, police were deployed across Gujarat to arrest the sellers of Ayurvedic syrup. After which, the Special Operation Group of Surat Police has had great success. Surat Police has seized 2195 bottles,” he stated.

“Raids were conducted at seven places in Surat. Police have arrested a total of seven accused, including one in Godadra, two in Kapodra, two in Varachha, one in Poona, and one accused in the Amroli area. The amount of alcohol in the syrup that has been seized is being investigated,: he further stated.

According to him, after the police submit the FSL report for all of the confiscated syrups, further investigation will begin.

According to Kheda Superintendent of Police Rajesh Gadhiya, the deaths related to the cough syrup case occurred on November 28 and 29. According to the police officer, the deceased were suspected of consuming ‘Kalmeghasav – Asava Arishta,’ an ayurvedic syrup supplied over the counter to almost 50 people by a grocery shop in Bilodara village near Nadiad.

According to authorities, such medical syrups are occasionally abused by alcoholics. Prohibition is in effect in Gujarat.
