HYDERABAD: Officials of Telangana Drugs Control Administration seized a ‘drug’ by name ‘Fair & Bright Cream, at Miryalaguda, for making a claim on the label that it ‘improves skin colour’, which is a prohibited claim for ‘Drugs’ as per the Drugs Rules.
In another raid, the officials seized drugs worth Rs. 50,000 from a quack’s clinic stocked for sale at Kaldurthy Village, Bodhan Mandal, Nizamabad District.
According to DCA Director-General VB Kamalasan Reddy, the DCA officials of Nalgonda Zone detected a ‘drug’ which is moving in the market under brand name “FAIR & BRIGHT Cream” (Hydroquinone, Tretinoin & Mometasone Furoate Cream) with a prohibited claim ‘improves skin colour’ on its label.
On 29th January, 2024, DCA officials detected the drug “FAIR & BRIGHT Cream” (Hydroquinone, Tretinoin & Mometasone Furoate Cream) at Sri Gopi Krishna Medicals, Islampura, Miryalguda which claims on the label as: “Hydroquinone in Fair & Bright lightens the dark patches of skin. Tretinoin in Fair and Bright improves the appearance of the skin by diminishing fine wrinkle lines. Reducing toughness and improving skin colour”.
The product “FAIR & BRIGHT Cream” (Hydroquinone, Tretinoin & Mometasone Furoate Cream) is a ‘drug’ and the claim ‘improves skin colour’ is a prohibited claim for a ‘drug’ as per ‘Schedule J’ of Drugs Rules. The said drug with a prohibited claim was manufactured by M/s. BCL Pharma, Rampur Majri, Dhaulakuan, Dist. Sirmour, Himachal Pradesh and marketed by M/s. Ashley Pharmatech Pvt. Ltd., Vasant Kunj, New Delhi.
DCA officials seized stocks worth Rs. 10,080 during the raid. K Dass, Assistant Director, Nalgonda and K Someshwar, Drugs Inspector, Miryalguda, G Surender, Drugs Inspector, Suryapet carried out the raid. Further investigation shall be carried out and action shall be taken as per the law against all the offenders.
In another incident, the officials, on credible information, raided premises of a quack Samaresh Halder, who is running a clinic at Kaldurthy Village, Bodhan Mandal, Nizamabad District, claiming himself as a ‘Rural Medical Practitioner’ and detected unauthorized stocking of huge quantity of medicines for sale. DCA officials seized 52 varieties of medicines including antibiotics, steroids, anti-ulcer drugs, antihypertensives, analgesics etc. of total worth Rs. 50,000 during the raid. The DCA officials of Nizamabad Zone, during the raid, detected huge stocks of medicines found stocked at the premises without any drug licence. 52 varieties of medicines including antibiotics, steroids, anti-ulcer drugs, anti-hypertensives, analgesics etc. are found stocked at the premises.

DCA officials detected several ‘antibiotics’ at the clinic during the raid. Indiscriminate sale of antibiotics by an unqualified person may have disastrous consequences on the health of the public in rural areas, including emergence of ‘Antimicrobial Resistance. N.
