Three held for illegal sale of painkillers in Vellore

Three persons involved in the illegal sale of painkiller tablets were arrested at Poigai village here on Friday.

The arrested are G. Kaviarasan, 26, N. Elumalai, 27, and K. Deepak, 26, of Mottur and Poigai. Initial inquiry revealed that police patrol teams intercepted the trio near Government Higher Secondary School on the Chennai-Bengaluru Highway.

On checking them, the police found 600 tapentadol tablets — a potent painkiller prescribed for post-surgical pain but often misused, and 50 syringes. Investigations revealed the trio were selling the tablets for youth and students in the area. The tablets, syringes, and a two-wheeler were seized.

The trio were arrested and lodged at Central Prison in Vellore. A probe is under way.
