Govt cracks down on erring pharma units

Shimla: Amid the ongoing anti-drug campaign launched on Nov 15, the Himachal Pradesh Police and drug administration on Wednesday conducted an inspection of the pharmaceutical manufacturing units and uncovered irregularities in four facilities.

These facilities had been either closed, suspended or had surrendered their licenses. The officials concerned confirmed that legal action was being initiated against all the violators.

A total of 20 such pharmaceutical units across the state were inspected on Wednesday to curb the illegal production and trafficking of controlled substances.

Joint teams of police officers and drug inspectors carried out systematic checks, verifying licences, scrutinising documents, auditing stock records, and searching warehouses and production areas, said an official spokesperson.

The drive aims to prevent the misuse of inactive units for manufacturing counterfeit or psychotropic drugs. Surprise inspections were conducted across six districts — Una, Bilaspur, Solan, Sirmaur, and Nurpur and Baddi (police districts), said the spokesperson, adding that five more units were still under review.

The state police said it had a ‘zero-tolerance policy’ toward drug-related offences.
