Maharashtra, Gujarat & Uttarakhand lead in action against misleading ads

New Delhi: The state governments of Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Uttarakhand are the front runners in taking action against the complaints they received on misleading and objectionable advertisements related to Ayush sector, through the Ayush Suraksha portal launched in May, 2025.

According to data from the Ministry of Ayush, Maharashtra received the highest number of complaints in the eight months from the launch of the portal till January, 2026, followed by Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Odisha.

Maharashtra received a total of 1,024 complaints regarding Misleading Advertisements (MLAs) and Objectionable Advertisements (OAs) on the portal since its launch, till January, 2026 and has initiated action all of the complaints.

Gujarat has also initiated action against all the 136 complaints it received, while Uttarakhand also acted upon all the 225 complaints received through the portal. Odisha acted on 213 out of the 232 complaints it received through the portal, till January, 2026, says data submitted by Prataprao Jadhav, minister of state of the Ministry of Ayush in Parliament recently.

However, Madhya Pradesh, which received 910 complaints, the second highest number of complaints during the period, took action only on 204 complaints, addressing around 22% of the complaints it received.

Tamil Nadu, which received 714 complaints, took action on around 77% of them, addressing around 551 complaints. Kerala received 103 complaints and took action on 52 (50%) of them. Tripura received 42 complaints and took action on 15 (around 35%) of them during the period. These are based on data submitted by the states to the Ministry, while data on other states are not available.

According to the data, out of a total of 9,070 MLAs, OAs submitted in the portal, almost 4,763 were submitted by the Intermediary Pharmacovigilance Centre (IPvC), under the National Institute of Ayurveda, Jaipur, followed by 2,030 complaints submitted by the IPvC of National Institute of Unani Medicine, Bengaluru; 1,080 by IPvC under the National Institute of Siddha, Chennai; and 810 by IPvC under the Institute of Teaching and Research in Ayurveda, Jamnagar.

Intermediary Pharmacovigilance Centre (IPvC), National Institute of Ayurveda, Jaipur submitted the details on the highest number of suspected Adverse Drug Reactions (ADRs), at 63, followed by IPvC, ITRA, Jamnagar at 57, and IPvC, NIUM, Bengaluru, at 49.

Interestingly, complaints from public on MLAs and OAs was a meagre 53, while there were no suspected ADRs reported by the public during the period. The IPvCs, along with the National Pharmacovigilance Coordination Centre (NPvCC), reported a total of 193 ADRs during the period, added the Ministry.

“All MLAs/OAs and suspected ADRs submitted on the portal since its launch till January 2026 were already forwarded to concerned authorities for further necessary action,” Jadhav informed the Lok Sabha in the latest Parliament session.

The Ministry of Ayush has launched an IT enabled Ayush Suraksha online portal to track the reported MLAs, OAs and ADRs, on May 30, 2025.The portal features a centralized dashboard for capturing of MLAs or OAs and tracking of suspected ADRs for prompt regulatory action and comprehensive data analysis.

The portal has been aligned with the National Pharmacovigilance Program through its three-tier network like Peripheral Pharmacovigilance Centres (PPvC), IPvCs and the NPvCC. It is also integrated with Ayush Licensing Authorities in the States and Union Territories, and Central government bodies like Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MoI&B), Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA), National Commission for Indian System of Medicine (NCISM), National Commission for Homoeopathy (NCH), Press Council of India (PCI) and Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) for taking appropriate action.

The portal also allows consumers, Ayush healthcare professionals to report MLAs or OAs, ADRs and regulatory authorities to monitor them. All complaints on the portal can be reviewed by National Pharmacovigilance Coordination Centre (NPvCC) and Ministry of Ayush, in order to promote transparency and accountability in the regulatory framework.

The Ministry also said that it has been conducting regular citizen-centric awareness and outreach programs. Besides, in order to sensitise the licensing authorities of the State and UTs on Ayush Suraksha Portal and for taking actions to curb misleading advertisements, the Ministry has conducted a training program in January, 2026 in Gujarat, it added.
