Dr Robot is at its best in BLK Super Specialty Hospital

New Delhi: As robot is only as good as a surgeon at the consol, the presence of renowned Dr Surender Dabas, Director, surgical oncology and Chief robotic surgery at BLK, makes hospital’s cancer centre a cut above the rest.

By all accounts, he is a master hand at robotic surgery and is counted among one of the best globally. His presence also makes hospital’s Cancer Centre par excellence. His record of 700 robotic surgeries bears ample testimony to his robotic proficiency and deftness.

Sample this. Om Prakash, a 77-year-old septuagenarian, was brought to BLK Cancer Centre with complaints of difficulty in swallowing for the past 2 months, accompanied with a significant weight loss. On evaluation, he was diagnosed with stomach cancer. After a comprehensive evaluation, the patient was counseled for surgical resection.

Dr. Surender Dabas and his team planned and performed a Robotic Total Gastrectomy upon the patient. This Robotic procedure required extensive resection. It would have required a big midline abdominal wound, delayed recovery and greater morbidity to the patient, if it had been done by conventional open surgery. Robotic Surgery, on the other hand, had the advantage of having fewer overall complications, lesser blood loss, reduced post-operative pain, early recovery and shorter hospital stay. The operation was uneventful, and the patient had an excellent post-operative recovery with no complications at all. Dr Dabas neatly removed the tumor.

The newly upgraded Cancer Centre in BLK has benefitted greatly, thanks to Dr Dabas spearheading Robotic Surgery Program here. He is a pioneer at Trans Oral robotic surgery in India. He has joined BLK Hospital as the Chief of Robotic Surgery and Director of Surgical Oncology Department. Dr. Dabas is credited with the maximum number of TransOral Robotic Surgeries in Asia and has already performed more than 20 challenging Robotic surgeries including Robotic Total Gastrectomy, Lung Bilobectomy, Radical Prostatectomy, Radical Hysterectomy, Partial & Radical Nephrectomy and TransOral Robotic surgeries here. With the recent upgrades and a comprehensive Robotic program, expertly manned by top specialists, BLK Cancer Centre now joins the ranks of select institutions in the country to offer highly complicated and sophisticated Robotic surgeries.

Robotic surgery is a type of minimally invasive surgery that allows a surgeon to perform many types of complex procedures with more precision, flexibility and control than is possible with conventional techniques. Surgery with a medical robot is a great alternative to conventional procedures for patients and can replace both open and laparoscopic procedures in many cases. Transoral (through the mouth) robotic surgery is minimally invasive, and greatly reduces the recovery time and its side effects.
