DCA Officials Seize Ayurvedic Medicines Over Misleading Claims

HYDERABAD: Drugs Control Administration, Telangana, officials seized ayurvedic medicines for misleading advertisements and an unauthorized slimming and cosmetics private limited, overpriced medicines and a quack in various parts of the state on Monday and Tuesday.

In an official release here on Tuesday, DCA Director-General VB Kamalasan Reddy said the officials detected certain ayurvedic medicines circulating in the market with misleading claims on their labels, stating that they treat ‘Rheumatism, ‘Paralysis’, ‘Menorrhagia’, ‘Dysmenorrhea, “Uterine bleeding’, and ‘Obesity. They seized Orthojoint oil claiming to treat rheumatism and paralysis, PCOD capsules claiming to treat menorrhagia, dysmenorrhea, uterine bleeding and Obekar capsules claiming to treat obesity.

Advertising a medicine for the treatment of ‘Rheumatism’, ‘Paralysis’, ‘Menorrhagia, ‘Dysmenorrhea’, ‘Uterine bleeding’, and ‘Obesity’ is prohibited under the Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act, 1954.

Acting on credible information regarding the illegal stocking and sale of medicines, raided Life Slimming and Cosmetics Pvt. Ltd., Road No. 12, Banjara Hills, Hyderabad and seized medicines including Botox Injections, Adrenaline Injections, local anesthetic injections, vitamin injections and certain infusions etc. worth Rs 40,000.

The DCA officials raided the premises of two quacks who were claiming themselves as ‘Rural Medical Practitioners’ and practicing medicine without proper qualifications at their clinics in Patancheru of Sangareddy district and New Hafeezpet in Rangareddy district and seized medicines worth around Rs 40,000.

The Drugs Control Administration officials seized ‘ITRAKAM-200 Capsules’ (Itraconazole Capsules 200 mg) at a medical shop located in Pragati Nagar, Hayathnagar, Rangareddy District for selling it higher price than the ceiling price fixed by the government.

The product ‘ITRAKAM-200 Capsules’ bears MRP as Rs. 305/- for 10 capsules i.e. Rs. 30.5/- per one capsule, on the label of the product which is a violation of Drugs (Prices Control) Order, 2013. The Ceiling price fixed by the Central Government including Wholesale Price Index (WPI) for the product “Itraconazole Capsules 200 mg” is Rs. 22.12 for one capsule (Ceiling Price).

Hence Maximum Retail Price (MRP) i.e. including GST 12% should not be more than Rs. 24.77 for one capsule (MRP-Ceiling Price+GST). The firm overpriced the product. Firm charged excess of Rs. 57.30 for 10 capsules which is a violation of Drugs (Prices Control) Order, 2013.

Anjum Abida and T Rajamouli, Assistant Directors, Rangareddy and Hyderabad respectively. V. Ravikumar, Drugs Inspector, Balapur, J. Nagaraju, Drugs Inspector, Saroornagar, Ch. Swapna, Drugs Inspector, Jubilee Hills and B. Lakshmi, Drugs Inspector, Charminar, M. Varaprasad, Drugs Inspector, Pashamylaram, A. Shylaja Rani, Drugs Inspector, Serilingampally, N. Ravikiran Reddy, Drugs Inspector, Sangareddy, G. Srikanth, Drugs Inspector, Jinnaram, D. Swetha Bindu, Drugs Inspector, Gandipet and Raju Laxmalla Reddy, Drugs Inspector, Hayathnagar participated in the raids in different locations.
