Gang Offers MBBS Seats On NRI Quota, Dupes Many, Arrested

NEW DELHI: This MBA graduate had a swanky office on Barakhamba Road from where he allegedly ran an elaborate racket which duped young school passouts and their families of their hard-earned money by promising a MBBS seat in the top medical colleges on NRI quota.

According to DCP (New Delhi) Pranav Tayal, the gang would procure the details of Class XII passouts through different channels after which they would be contacted individually by the telecallers employed by the gang.

Those who weren’t able to crack the exam in the first attempt were hot targets.

When a number of families approached the police, the suspect went underground. A court declared him an absconder last month. However, a team comprising ACP Atul Verma and SHO finally tracked the suspect, Rajeev Kumar, down to a society in Greater Noida and arrested him. The accused has been interrogated about the other members of his gang who are being traced, cops said.

Elaborating on the alleged scams run by the accused, cops said that he had targeted a student way back in 2015. “The complainant, Nikhil Yadav, alleged that, in the month of March 2015, the accused made a call to him and offered admission in an MBBS course on a very low fee structure. The admission was promised in a medical college in Maharashtra and the complainant gave Rs 2.5 lakh as facilitation charges,” DCP Tayal said. However, the accused neither got him a seat nor gave his money back.

Another complainant, Atoki Jimomi, a resident of Vasant Kunj, alleged that the accused took Rs 25 lakh from him on the pretext of admission in MD/MS course last year. The complainant met them and gave original educational certificates and the agreed amount but he also met a similar fate.

The cops said that the third complaint was received from a man named Vinay Kumar who was duped of Rs 6.7 lakh by the accused who claimed to be the director of a company named Medical Worldwide last year.

“It was learnt that the accused used to visit Bengaluru and Maharashtra most of the time besides Greater Noida. On the basis of technical surveillance and a tip-off, the accused was nabbed from a flat in Gaur City II society in Greater Noida,” the DCP added.
