Padmashree Dr Mahipal Sachdeva, ace eye specialist, turns Vishisht Chikitsa Ratan

New Delhi: As is his motto –every eye deserves the best- Dr Mahipal Singh Sachdev, a renowned eye specialist and Chairman, Centre for Sight chain of Eye Care, always deserved the best of honours. On the top of awards galore that already bedeck him, Delhi Medical Association (DMA), on Doctors Day, put him on the pantheon of Who’s Who of Doctors who were conferred with Vishisht Chikitsa Ratan (Distinguished gem of a doctor).

J.P. Nadda, Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare, handed him the decoration in a glittering ceremony in Maulana Azad Medical College. Others who were bestowed upon with this chosen award included stalwarts like  Dr. Randeep Guleria, Director, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Dr. Balram Bhargava, Dr. Ashok Seth, Chairman, Cardiac Sciences, Fortis Escort, Dr. T.S. Kler, Dr. A.S. Soin. DMA also honoured Dr.J.S. Guleria, Dr G.P. Seth, Dr. M.G. Abbott and Dr. M.L. Dang with DMA Life Time Achievement Award. These stalwarts were feted on the occasion for their outstanding contribution towards the medical profession and in the service society. Dr. Mahesh SharmaHon’ble Minister for the state for Culture also graced the occasion.

Dr Sachdev is a rare combination of a brilliant surgeon, an entrepreneur and above all, a compassionate human being. As a renowned ophthalmic Surgeon, he is recognized for his expertise in the area of Corneal, Refractive & Cataract Surgery, both nationally and internationally. He is widely credited to be pioneer in India in propagating the technique of Phacoemulsification for cataract surgery and Lasik Laser for removal of glasses.

Dr Mahipal Sachdev left prized faculty position in a hospital like AIIMS and ventured out in uncertain waters to create a world class eye hospital of his dream. And lo and behold! He did it with aplomb. Centre for Sight now stands as a metaphor of excellence in Eye Care and straddles across the ophthalmic landscape of home and abroad. Centre for Sight (CFS) offers state of the art medical facilities at a fraction of the cost compared to anywhere under the sun with patients uppermost on his mind. It is truly a testimony to Dr Sachdev’s spirit of enterprise and vision.

Padmashree Dr Sachdev pursued his medical education at the graduate and post graduate level at the prestigious All India Institute of Medical Sciences. During his residency, Dr Sachdev was awarded the Best Resident Award and also topped his batch in the M.D.Exams. He later joined AIIMS as a Faculty Member. In the year 1989 on a sabbatical from the AIIMS and to master the latest in eye care, he took up a Fellowship at Georgetown University, Washington DC, USA for a year and then returned to AIIMS.

Dr Mahipal S. Sachdev has received numerous awards and distinctions in India and abroad for his contribution to Ophthalmology. He has been recognized globally with fellowships and scholarships from the ‘Fifth International Symposium on Immunopathology’- Japan, ‘International Society of Eye Research’, ‘Research to Prevent Blindness’, New York, ‘Fisons’ award by the Contact Lens Association of Ophthalmologists, USA amongst others. In India he has won the ‘A C Aggrawal Memorial Trophy’, ‘Col. Ranagachary Certificate’, ‘Krishna Sohan Singh Trophy’, ‘Dr Ishwar Chand Silver Jubilee Award’to name a few.
