Successful Kidney Transplant in an Old Man, 62, amidst COVID 19 Fears

New Delhi:  Dr NK Gupta, 62 years of old, underwent a successful kidney transplant at Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals. A medical practitioner himself, Dr Gupta had been undergoing multiple sessions of dialysis from December 2019.

He was scheduled for a kidney transplant in April 2020, where his wife was the donor. Things fell out of plan when COVID 19 hit India and the government announced a complete lockdown in the country. COVID 19 posed a higher risk of developing serious complications for people with chronic kidney disease, hence initially Dr Gupta and his family had apprehensions on whether they should continue dialysis and push the transplant for a couple of months.

Dr. (Prof.) Sandeep Guleria, senior consultant, kidney transplant, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, said, “ There has been a recent spike in cases  of chronic kidney disease owing to a relatedincrease in the number of people suffering from co-morbidities like diabetes and high blood pressure, which in the longer run leads to kidney related ailments. It is crucial for people to understand the significance of undergoing kidney transplants at the required juncture and not delaying it. People usually tend to delay the process and prefer being on dialysis, but they become prone to associated complications like infections and blood loss.”

“In Dr Gupta’s case, initially the family was apprehensive on whether they should continue dialysis and push the transplant for a couple of months, as COVID 19 posed a higher risk of developing serious complications for people with chronic kidney disease. But after counselling them, they agreed for the kidney transplant. The patient was admitted on 4th May after which the procedure happened successfully, the donor was discharged within a week and the Gupta, the recipient, was discharged at the 8th day of the transplant,” he further added.

The hospital has a separate operation theatre for renal procedures, and the team ensured that during the procedure absolute hygiene was maintained, all infection control measures were taken, the nurses and the GDA staff were kept separate from that of the COVID staff. We are thankful to Indraprastha Apollo Hospital,”,daughter of the patient said.

Apollo Institutes of Transplant provides a multi-disciplinary, highly skilled state of-the-art service to patients under one roof, supported by cutting-edge medical technology and infrastructure. It has a separate OT for renal procedures.
