Coimbatore: A 21-year-old man died after receiving an injection for stomach pain from an unregistered medical practitioner at a medical centre at Senjeri in Sulur taluk on Saturday.
Police identified the deceased as K Prabhu of Senjeri.
Prabhu had complained of stomach pain on Saturday and visited Doss Medical Centre at Senjeri for treatment.
The doctor there administered an injection to him. Later that afternoon, after returning home, Prabhu collapsed in the bathroom. Locals rushed him to a private hospital at Senjerimalai, where doctors declared him dead.
Based on a complaint by Prabhu’s mother, Rangal, the Sultanpet police registered a case of unnatural death under Section 194 of the BNSS Act.
Police also informed the joint director of health services NN Rajasekaran, who visited the medical centre on Sunday and conducted an inquiry.
During the investigation, it was revealed that the doctor, Victor Jeeva Rathinam, 27, had completed his MBBS degree in Georgia but had not passed the Foreign Medical Graduates Examination (FMGE), a mandatory requirement by the National Board of Examinations for practising medicine in India.
“The medical centre owner, Paul Jeyaseelan, has two sons. Both the sons had completed their MBBS in Georgia. His elder son, Victor Jeeva Rathinam, used the prescription slip of a registered doctor for Prabhu’s treatment. The registered doctor is Paul’s relative Shan Jeevanesan from Kotagiri. Shan Jeevanesan visits the clinic twice a month. But he had not visited the clinic for the past three months,” Rajasekaran said.
Victor Jeeva Rathinam is not qualified to practise as he did not pass the FMGE exam or register with the Tamil Nadu Medical Council. His younger brother, however, passed the exam and is awaiting registration. “We will submit a detailed report on Monday,” Rajasekaran said.
Prabhu’s postmortem was conducted at the govt ESI Medical College and Hospital in Singanallur on Sunday. Doctors said that samples of the deceased’s internal organs would be sent for pathological and chemical analysis. “We expect to receive the report in a week, which will reveal the cause of death,” they added.
Police said they will file a case against Victor Jeeva Rathinam based on the findings of the joint director of health’s report.
