Dermatologists Raise Concern Over Rising Skin Conditions In India

Mumbai: Dermatologists have noticed a significant increase in various skin conditions in India in recent years. Issues range from fungal infections, acne and hair loss to pigmentation.

Dr. Sonali Kohli, a consultant dermatologist at Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital, attributed the rise in fungal infections to changing climatic conditions. Kohli also said the misuse of over-the-counter (OTC) creams, especially those containing steroids, has worsened the problem.

Such creams provide immediate relief but make infections more resilient and harder to treat in the long term.

Dr. Simal Soin, a chief dermatologist at AAYNA Clinics and Chief Medical Officer at Clinikally, also highlighted the dangers of indiscriminate steroid use. Many individuals self-medicate with medications obtained from pharmacists, leading to misuse. Topical steroids can alter the nature of fungal infections and overall skin conditions, causing serious side effects like skin thinning and stretch marks. Therefore, it is crucial that steroids are prescribed by dermatologists and used under professional guidance.

Fungal infections can become severe if not treated appropriately. They are generally managed with a combination of topical creams and oral antifungal medications. However, untreated infections can worsen, leading to more serious health issues.

Tropical climates and air pollution significantly affect skin health. In such climates, the skin absorbs more dust and grime, leading to conditions like acne, fungal infections, and hair root infections. Poor diets also contribute to these skin issues, with a notable increase in cases of adult acne.

To maintain healthy skin, the dermatologists recommended a double cleansing method, using micellar water, and wearing wide-brim hats, larger sunglasses, and the correct sunscreen. A balanced diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants is also crucial. For example, a diet that includes a variety of colorful vegetables can significantly benefit skin health.

A general protocol for protecting the skin includes using sunscreen and cleansing the skin twice daily. Using appropriate skin products and maintaining a healthy diet are also important.

Hair loss is influenced by various factors, including genetics, poor diets, and overuse of hair treatments. Additionally, harmful chemicals in water and deficiencies in iron and B12 can contribute to hair loss. It is imperative to see a doctor as each individual’s issues vary.

The skin aesthetics market has seen significant growth, driven by increased awareness and demand for treatments such as medical facials and Botox. There is a growing focus on preventive aging and addressing issues like acne scarring and pigmentation. The market for weight loss treatments is also expanding, with aesthetic treatments now including a wide range of options, from medifacials to more advanced procedures. There is a shift towards a more holistic and preventive approach in aesthetics.
