Are robots making their mark in operation theatres?

The ubiquitous robots have come to the operation theatre too. They have become important in making surgeries minimally invasive, keeping hospitalisation of the patient at the minimum and making post-operative care much easier. Many doctors opine that surgical robots are inevitable for better medical care in certain cases and lowering the risks associated with many types of surgery.

What is a Surgical Robot?
A surgical robot is an obedient assistant to an accomplished surgeon that enhances his/her ability to get a magnified view, allowing manoeuvrability that far exceeds a human hand. Its benefits include minimally-invasive surgery, no blood loss, less pain, less chance of infection and tissue damage and faster recovery with minimal scars. According to a BIS Research report titled ‘Global Surgical Robotics Market – Analysis and Forecast, 2017-2025’, the Indian market is expected to grow from $64.9 million in 2016 to $349.3 million by 2025, a CAGR of 20%.
