Electronic Cigarettes – may be Prohibited

Electronic cigarette is a new concept of nicotine intoxication and is much more harmful than a normal cigarette. As the label of e cigarette clearly claims that it has 40 times more potency of nicotine than the normal cigarette. In normal cigarette nicotine is present in the tobacco contained in the cigarette whereas electronic cigarette has nicotine in pure chemical form dissolved in propylene glycol and adsorbed on cotton. Nicotine in pure chemical form is much more harmful than the nicotine present in the tobacco in normal cigarette.

This concept of intoxication of nicotine in pure chemical form is an imported concept from the western world and is more popular among the younger generation especially in engineers, computer software programmers and persons working in the night shifts. High concentration of nicotine in pure chemical form is more injurious to the health. Nicotine may cause mouth sores, blisters or irritation, nausea or vomiting, sore throat, acid or sour stomach, belching, diarrhea, dizziness, heartburn, blurred vision, headache, nervousness, hiccups, mouth tooth jaw or neck pain, problems with teeth, unusual tiredness or weakness etc.

Propylene glycol used as a vehicle for nicotine in e cigarettes also generally contains Di ethylene glycol as impurity and generally present in commercial/industrial grade Propylene glycol which is used in e cigarettes. This impurity of Di ethylene glycol is renal toxic and may lead to kidney failures, if taken in more than legal dose. There are reported cases of deaths due to kidney failure due to Di ethylene glycol in Gurgaon in which many children died because of this.

Intoxication of nicotine in pure chemical form in e cigarettes is becoming popular because of its longer durability; no smell remained in the mouth and produced in air as no smoke is generated after in hailing e cigarette. E cigarette also does not require any matchbox or lighter to lit the cigarette as vapours are generated through re chargeable electronic gadget. Rather e cigarettes sometime contains mint, menthol or any other flavour which masks the pungent smell of tar in normal cigarettes. Therefore, these e cigarettes are becoming popular among the younger generation, school going children.
