FSSAI asked for suggestions to draft complementary food standards

FSSAI shared a notification regarding the proposal to set standards related to Complementary Foods for Older Infants and Young Children in the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, 2011. FSSAI  asked stakeholders to share comments and suggestions with the FSSAI office by 17 November 2017.  The idea of Complementary foods is beneficial as these foods are very good to use during and beyond complementary feeding period.

Within a period of six months, the revised standards will be notified for implementation. Once they get published in the Official Gazette and these will be called the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives)….Amendment Regulations, 2017.

The new standards for Complementary Foods for Older Infants and Young Children will be added to the “Malt extract”  category of foods in the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, 2011.

Complementary foods are specially formulated to serve the nutritional requirements of the children after or during complementary feeding period to provide extra energy and nutrients to complement foods derived from the local diet by providing those nutrients that are either non-existent or present in insufficient quantities.
