ICMR To Strengthen IPR Unit To Safeguard And Commercialize Scientific Innovations

Mumbai: In a strategic move to bolster its Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) capabilities, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has issued an invitation for expressions of interest from its in-house scientists and technical officers. This call aims to attract qualified personnel for transfer or posting to the IPR Unit at ICMR headquarters, New Delhi. The initiative underscores ICMR’s vision to safeguard and commercialize scientific innovations developed under its aegis.

A senior official at ICMR, emphasized the importance of this initiative stating, “Our goal is to strengthen the IPR Unit to ensure that the scientific innovations generated through ICMR-funded research are adequately protected and effectively commercialized. This will not only benefit the scientific community but also enhance public health outcomes.”

The ICMR has outlined a clear mandate for its IPR Unit, which includes educating scientists on the critical need to protect new knowledge through intellectual property rights. This includes ownership of biological and other materials and data generated using ICMR funds, creating robust procedures at ICMR institutions to capture, assess, and protect new intellectual property.

It also includes maintaining national and international databases to provide ICMR scientists with up-to-date patent information relevant to their fields, offering comprehensive technological, professional, and legal services to assist in filing patents both domestically and internationally.

This will encourage and aid universities and other institutions in protecting and commercializing knowledge generated with ICMR support and developing policies that ensure maximal public health benefit and fair returns on investments from ICMR research. This will help create an advisory body to the Indian government on IP issues concerning public health and help form strategic partnerships with national and international S&T agencies and industries to market new inventions and develop professional knowledge networks.

The ICMR is seeking two scientists (non-medical) and two technical officers from the following disciplines: microbiology, biochemistry, biotechnology, biomedical sciences, life sciences, molecular biology, pharmacology, biology, biosciences, medical genetics, immunology, zoology, and bioinformatics.

Interested candidates must submit their applications through the proper channel by July 25, 2024. Applications should be sent to the email address admn2355@gmail.com.

The ICMR’s proactive approach to reinforcing its IPR Unit highlights the critical role of intellectual property management in advancing medical research. By attracting skilled professionals, ICMR aims to enhance its capacity to protect and leverage scientific discoveries, ultimately contributing to improved healthcare solutions and innovations.
