New Delhi: In a significant milestone for cancer care in India, the President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, formally inaugurated the SGRH Cancer Care Centre at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital and interacted with cancer patients, a cutting-edge facility dedicated to providing comprehensive care to cancer patients.
The President ceremonially unveiled the plaque and visited the premises, acknowledging the hospital’s pivotal role in delivering ethical and affordable healthcare. Her presence marked a moment of pride and recognition for the institution’s seven-decade-long legacy. This centre makes SGR one of the best cancer care centre in North India.
Sir Ganga Ram Hospital’s remarkable journey began in the early years of independent India. Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru laid its foundation stone in April 1951, and it was formally inaugurated on April 13, 1954, coinciding with Sir Ganga Ram’s birth anniversary. At the core of this institution lies a deep-rooted commitment to trust and philanthropy—the hospital is not just run by a trust, but its very philosophy is built on giving back to society.
From its modest beginnings, the hospital has grown into one of India’s most respected healthcare institutions, currently housing over 900 beds, 71 specialities, more than 100 specialised clinics, and 35 advanced operating theatres. In today’s highly commercialised healthcare environment, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital stands out as a unique and sustainable model, growing steadily while upholding values of compassion and service.
We are among the only healthcare institutions still leading through daily teaching rounds and clinical discussions, reflecting our dedication to continuous learning and patient-centerd care. With state-of-the-art technology and some of the finest medical professionals in the country, the hospital remains a beacon of excellence, setting benchmarks in India’s competitive healthcare sector.
This center is envisioned as a comprehensive center that will serve as a one-stop destination for cancer diagnosis, treatment, and long-term care. It brings together medical oncology, surgical oncology, radiation therapy, and day-care chemotherapy under one roof. Equipped with the latest diagnostic and therapeutic technologies, the new facility will follow a multidisciplinary approach to ensure personalised, precise, and compassionate care to every cancer patient.
This development aligns seamlessly with Sir Ganga Ram Hospital’s vision, to be a leading healthcare delivery, education, research, and training institution that honours the legacy of its founder by providing equitable and affordable services to all. Speaking at the event, hospital officials reaffirmed their commitment to a future of healthcare that is not only technologically advanced but also rooted in trust, humility, and compassion.
With the launch of the Comprehensive Cancer Care Centre, the hospital further strengthens its mission of pursuing excellence in ethical and sustainable healthcare, backed by advanced research and training. The new cancer care center represents a seamless blend of modern infrastructure and a deeply rooted value system. It not only stands for medical excellence but also embodies the hospital’s unwavering belief in equity, empathy, and ethical care.
At the ceremony, Dr. D.S. Rana, Chairman at Sir Ganga Ram Trust Society, said, “The SGR Trust Society is deeply committed to providing quality and ethical healthcare at an affordable cost to all sections of society. In fact, SGRH stands as an epitome of a sustainable and stable charity-based healthcare model. For the past 50 years, the hospital has been managed by a dedicated Board of Management consisting of 25 eminent doctors and a small core administrative team.
