Six Women Develop Serious Complications After C-Section

Jaipur/Kota — In a serious medical incident that has raised concerns over patient safety at government facilities, six women who underwent caesarean section deliveries at Kota’s New Medical College Hospital developed severe post-operative complications, resulting in the death of one woman and critical condition of five others. The Rajasthan government has responded promptly, with Health Minister Gajendra Singh Khinvsar directing immediate intervention and a high-level medical team from Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Medical College, Jaipur, being rushed to Kota for on-ground support and investigation.

According to hospital authorities, 12 to 13 women underwent C-section surgeries on the evening of May 4 at the New Medical College Hospital (also known as Government Medical College and Hospital), Kota. Within hours, six of them began showing alarming symptoms, including low blood pressure, falling platelet counts, and urinary blockage, pointing to possible kidney-related complications. The five surviving women were immediately shifted to the Nephrology Department in the Super Specialty Block (SSB) of the hospital for specialised care, while their newborns were moved to the NMCH ward. One of the women unfortunately succumbed to the complications.

Taking immediate cognisance of the matter, the state government has treated the episode with utmost seriousness. Medical & Health Minister Shri Gajendra Singh Khinvsar directed the formation of a specialised team and ordered a prompt, impartial inquiry into the entire episode. Principal Secretary of the Medical Education Department, Smt. Gayatri Rathod, confirmed that all affected women are now under continuous monitoring in the Nephrology ward at Kota’s Super Specialty Hospital, with advanced treatment being provided as required. To ensure expert intervention, a four-member team of senior specialists from SMS Medical College, Jaipur, was despatched to Kota without delay. The team comprises:

  • Dr. Nihar Sharma, Department of Anaesthesia
  • Dr. Sunil Kumar Mahawar, Department of Medicine
  • Dr. Pawan Agrawal, Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology
  • Dr. Sanjeev Kumar Sharma, Department of Nephrology

The expert team will actively assist in ongoing treatment, conduct a detailed clinical assessment, and support the local medical staff in managing the patients’ condition. The Principal of Kota Medical College and other officials have also been instructed to ensure round-the-clock monitoring and the best possible care for the affected mothers.

Smt. Gayatri Rathod emphasised that the state government has ordered a thorough, transparent, and time-bound investigation into the incident. “If any negligence or lapse is found at any level, strict action will be taken against the guilty officials and staff as per rules,” she stated. The government has made it clear that accountability will be fixed and corrective measures will be implemented to prevent recurrence of such incidents in the future.

This swift response comes amid reports of families alleging possible lapses during or after the surgeries. The arrival of the Jaipur-based specialist team is expected to bring additional expertise in critical care, nephrology, and gynaecology to stabilise the patients and help ascertain the exact cause of the complications.

The Rajasthan government has assured that the health and safety of mothers and newborns remain its top priority, and all necessary steps are being taken to restore confidence in the state’s medical infrastructure. Further updates on the patients’ condition and the findings of the inquiry will be shared as the investigation progresses.
