New Delhi: A Thalassemia and BMT (Bone Marrow Transplant) Clinic was a pressing need in North Region, especially after experience during COVID catastrophe. Dharamshila Narayana moves forward to meet the unmet needs and launches region’s first such clinic. This will prove a godsend for Thalassemic.
Some studies underline the urgent need of such clinic. A study confirms with around 1,00,000 patients, India is one of the countries with largest number of Thalassemia patients. Another data says that every year around 10,000 children are born with Thalassemia. With regular medications, timely hospital visits, blood transfusion in every 2 to 3 weeks the management of Thalassemia is considered to be one of the complex treatments. During COVID pandemic management of Thalassemia patients’ treatment got massively affected. Ensuring the reach of right treatment to every thalassemia patient is the need of the hour.
On inaugural occasion, Chief Guest Shobha Tuli, Secretary- Thalassemia India, Vice President- Thalassemia International Federation, President- Federation of Indian Thalassemic and the guest of Honour J. S. Arora, General Secretary of National Thalassemia Welfare Society and Federation of Indian Thalassemic highlighted the need of wider Thalassemia screening and timely treatment to every patient. Dr. S Khanna, President and Founder of Dharamshila Cancer Foundation and Research Centre and Commander Navneet Bali, Regional Director, North India, Narayana Health emphasized that the importance of right management of Thalassemia treatment. Dr S Khanna said that Thalassemia screening is a must for timely clinical interventions.
Dr. Sarita Rani Jaiswal, Program Director, BMT,who have successfully conducted over 150 Haploidentical BMT at this center with excellent results, spread awareness about BMT in Thalassemia. Thalassemia Centre and BMT Clinic is a comprehensive care center under one roof with all advancement.
Dr. Suparno Chakrabarti, HOD and Senior Consultant, BMT and Hematology and Dr. Sarita Jaiswal, Consultant, Hematology and Program Director, BMT will give consultations to the patients in the Clinic. Thalassemia is a hereditary condition in which blood cells either remain lesser than the normal or they are born with abnormal shapes. Many thalassemia patients’ survival remains almost on the donated blood supply. Talking about abnormalities in blood including thalassemia, sickle cell anemia etc., BMT is considered to be one of the complex but successful treatments.
