BHUBANESWAR: Kin of a patient, who died in AIIMS Bhubaneswar early on Sunday morning, staged demonstration in front of the hospital here demanding action against the doctors and other hospital staff for misbehaving with them.
They also leveled allegations against the doctors and hospital staff of medical negligence. Locals also joined with the relatives in the demonstration. Later they lodged a complaint with the Khandagiri police against the medical staff.
Sources said Nandakishore Pradhan, 78, of Chotraipur in the city was admitted in the emergency ward of the AIIMS at around 3 am on Sunday. He was feeling pain in his chest. He died after 20 minutes.
Sushant Kumar Pradhan, son of the deceased, said the medical staff had started misbehaving with the attendants of the patient from the beginning. “They were not cooperating with us in getting a bed in the casualty ward and oxygen for my father. We had argument with the staff over these problems. Suddenly they started abusing us. Even the doctors assaulted me. Later other medical staff joined with them,” he alleged.
Medical authorities denied allegations leveled by the relatives of the patient. Gitanjali Batmanabane, director of AIIMS Bhubaneswar, said the 78-year-old man came to hospital in a very critical condition. “He was probably having heart attack. Our doctors provided necessary treatment and oxygen to the patient immediately. In fact, relatives of the patient treated the doctors very badly,” she added.
She said they went through the CCTV footages and found doctors did not beat up the relatives of the deceased patient. “We have conducted postmortem on the body of the patient. He died due to massive cardiac arrest. There is no truth in the allegation of medical negligence,” she added.
Hospital authority has lodged a complaint with the local police about the incident. Later the director met twin city police commissioner Y B Khurania and discussed with him about security of doctors and medical staff inside the campus.
City DCP Satyabrat Bhoi said the commissionerate police have received complaints from both the parties. “But we have not registered any case yet. We are examining the case after sending the body for postmortem. The situation is normal now,” he added.
