One more held in spurious plasma racket; police say he supplied 12 boxes

Ahmedabad: The Ahmedabad Rural police have arrested one more accused in the alleged spurious blood plasma racket, taking the total number of arrests in the case to seven. Police said Ajit Solanki, 33, a resident of Bavla, supplied 12 boxes of plasma to the main accused, Dinesh Chaudhary, during March and April this year.

The case surfaced after police uncovered an alleged network in which good-quality plasma was replaced with inferior plasma mixed with saline water before being supplied through blood banks to a pharmaceutical company. Earlier, police had arrested Chaudhary along with Jitendra Solanki, Rafik Khalifa, Mohan Gaikwad, Prakash and Ashok Sangle.

According to investigators, Solanki came in contact with Chaudhary through Solanki, who worked as a driver with the complainant pharmaceutical company. Police said that Solanki used the company’s pickup vehicle to transport plasma collected from Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh. The pickup vehicle allegedly used in the transportation has been seized.

Police said a pathology report from BJ Medical College found that the 1,140 plasma units seized from Chaudhary’s residence were spurious or adulterated. After obtaining permission from a Sanand court, the seized plasma units were destroyed in the presence of police officers, officials of the food and drugs department, experts from BJ Medical College and representatives of an authorised biomedical waste management agency.

The Ahmedabad Rural police are continuing the investigation to trace the source and destination of the plasma supplied through the network.
