Coimbatore hospital aims to get listed in the Guinness World Records as well for achieving success in the removal of a tumor weighed 33.5kg, and this weight we can equalize to the weight of 11 full term babies born at an average weight of 3kg each.
Hospital authorities said that this is the “world’s heaviest tumor” and with the help of their experts, they managed to successfully remove an ovarian tumor weighing 33.5 kg from a 46-year-old woman’s stomach from Ooty. The sufferer Vasantha was struggling a lot to walk, breathlessness and also could not consume food properly as this causes pain in her stomach. She ignored the increased size of her stomach and no pain or problem she was experienced before. But she compelled to consult a doctor regarding the increased stomach size and pain she was experiencing.
After consultation, the doctor found in the reports that it was an ovarian tumor; and refused to undertake a surgery citing slim chances of survival for Vasantha. A tumor keeps on growing from the last two years slowly and ignorance made it increase that much size and weight. When all the Ooty based doctors refused to attend this case then one of their followed passengers suggested the name of Coimbatore hospital, then they visited the hospital.
Dr. Kumar and his team attended the case and took this challenge with their expertise. Dr. Kumar said that we realized the complexity of the case and the sheer size caused too many risks like the amount of anesthesia as it is based on body weight. Since a tumor was pushing the diaphragm up, her lungs had collapsed. And the inferior vena cava had been compressed.
The doctors conducted all investigations within a day and took her in for surgery the next day. With 3 and half hours long surgery, doctors successfully removed the tumor with the help of special equipment to seal blood vessels and reduce bleeding. Special machines are used to keep massaging her leg muscles and avoid a deep vein thrombosis.
The hospital has already got approval and certification from Indian Book of Records and Asian Book of Records.
