Medicinal drug seizures go up, arrests come down

CHANDIGARH: The seizure of banned injectable vials and intoxicatant tablets have gone up this year as compared to last year. From January 1 to December 18, cops recovered 4,081 banned injectable vials. On the other hand, 3,989 vials were recovered in 2017. Cops recovered 10,653 banned tablets and 960 capsules this year, while there was not a single seizure of banned capsules and tablets last year.

The main reason behind the smuggling of banned vials is the high profit in selling them to addicts. Smugglers buy a vial for anywhere between Rs 80 and 120 and sell it between Rs 250 and Rs 300, sources said.

Police had arrested 179 drug peddlers — 64 of them with banned vials and tablets — from the city this year. A total of 169 cases had been registered under NDPS Act in 16 police stations. Last year, police had registered 240 cases and arrested 244 drug peddlers from different parts of the city. Pawan Kumar, DSP, crime branch, said that the zero tolerance of the police towards drug trafficking led to dip in drug cases registered in the city this year.

After medicinal drugs, police recovered heroin in large quantity. As many as 63 persons were arrested with 1.14kg heroin. Cops arrested 29 smugglers with 28 kg ganja this year and seized 4.7 kg charas from 12 accused. Cops had recovered 3.9 kg opium from nine peddlers.
