After the death of children, MP AYUSH department seized Ayurvedic medicines and sent samples for testing

New Delhi:  Following the death of a five-month-old baby in Madhya Pradesh’s Chhindwara after allegedly consuming Ayurvedic medicines, the state government’s AYUSH department has seized the medicines and sent samples for testing and other necessary legal action, the AYUSH Ministry said on Friday.

The Ministry of AYUSH said that the Ministry is actively coordinating with the State authorities to ensure the highest standards of safety and quality in AYUSH medicines and to promote their safe and effective use for public welfare.

The Ministry of AYUSH is committed to ensuring the safety and quality standards of AYUSH medicines and from time to time issues necessary instructions to the State and Union Territory (UT) governments to ensure compliance with the provisions under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940 and the Drugs Rules, 1945, the ministry said in a statement.

The enforcement of legal provisions relating to quality control of Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani, Sowa-Rigpa and Homeopathy drugs/medicines and issuance of drug licences is vested with the State Drug Controllers/State Licensing Authorities appointed by the respective State and Union Territory Governments, the statement said.

It said the concerned State and Union Territory licensing authorities have the power to take action against misbranded, adulterated and spurious AYUSH medicines.

“As per the information received from the Drug Control Department, AYUSH, Government of Madhya Pradesh, immediate action has been taken in this regard, which includes seizure of the alleged drugs, sending samples for testing and other necessary legal action,” the statement said.
