Blood Bank theft at AIIMS Bhopal; 1 booked

Bhopal: In a shocking incident, multiple units of blood and plasma were reported stolen from the blood bank of the premier All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Bhopal, police said on Thursday.

Following a complaint filed by Dr Gyanendra Prasad, the blood bank in-charge at AIIMS Bhopal, the Bagh Sevania police registered an FIR on Wednesday against an outsourced employee under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

As per the complaint, blood and plasma units had been disappearing from the blood bank for a long time, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Misrod area) Rajnish Kashyap Koul told PTI.

An outsourced employee has been booked and he will be arrested soon, the police officer said, adding they have sought CCTV footage of the hospital premises from the AIIMSadministration as part of the probe.

According to police sources, the accused was captured in CCTV footage a couple of days ago while allegedly stealing some units of plasma (liquid portion of blood) and handing them over to an unidentified person.

AIIMS authorities suspected some insider’s role in the matter, and had placed CCTV cameras inside the blood bank, they added.

Police have assured that strict action will be taken against those found guilty, and further investigation is underway.

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that, in a shocking revelation, a sting operation named ‘Operation Blood’ by a local media had exposed how patients in Bhopal are being forced to pay for blood, turning a life-saving resource into a commodity sold for profit. Despite being one of the most basic and essential parts of medical treatment, blood has become part of the black market. This illegal trade is not limited to small setups but stretches across top government and private hospitals, cancer centres, and even the prestigious AIIMS Bhopal.
