Brain Dead Youth’s Organs proved Manna from ‘Aakash’ saving 5 lives

New Delhi: As 18 year old boy cruised heavenward, windfall of lives followed in Aakash Healthcare. In his death from a fatal accident, the boy became the reason for gift of life to 5 people who were looking at certain death. His brand new heart, lungs, kidneys and liver were like manna from heaven for the recipients. The compassion and humanity shown by family of brain dead youth even in the midst of profound sorrow is sure to standout to inspire people for organ donations in India.

The boy succumbed to injuries sustained in an accident at Aakash Healthcare, leaving his loved ones devastated. However, in a remarkable display of empathy and courage, his parents made the decision to donate his organs, ensuring that boy’s legacy would live on through saving the lives of others.

Dr Nagesh Chandra, Senior Consultant & HOD, Neurosurgery and Spine Surgery, Aakash Healthcare conveyed that despite the team’s utmost efforts, the boy tragically succumbed to injuries sustained in the accident

Pushpa Jindal, boy’s aunt, a prominent educationist and social activist, played a pivotal role in persuading grieving parents to consider organ donation. “In the face of tragedy, we found strength in the thought that he could bring hope and life to others through his organs,” remarked Jindal, reflecting on the family’s decision.

The boy’s organs were swiftly allocated to patients in critical need across various hospitals by NOTTO. His heart found its new home at Fortis, while his lungs were transplanted into Niranjan Vishwakarma at Medanta. The gift of kidneys went to Kush Dhamija at Max Vaishali and another recipient at Aakash Healthcare, while Ravi Kumar Srivastava received his liver, also at Aakash Healthcare. Additionally, his corneas were donated to Shroff Eye Hospital, while unfortunately, there were no takers for his pancreas and intestines. A team of dedicated doctors at Aakash Healthcare, including Dr. Ajitabh Srivastava (Director & Senior Consultant, Liver Transplant & Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Surgery), Dr Ashish George (Senior Consultant, Liver Transplant, GI Surgery and Hepatobiliary Surgery), Dr. Vikas Agarwal (Director & HOD – Robotic Urology, Kidney Transplant, Uro Oncology, Andrology & Male Infertility), and Anaesthesia Team Dr Namita Sharma (Senior Consultant & HOD – Anaesthesia & Pain Management), Dr Sanjay Agarwal, Dr Vandana Dudeja, worked tirelessly to ensure the successful harvesting of boy’s organs.

Dr. Aashish Chaudhry, Managing Director of Aakash Healthcare, emphasized the critical need for organ donations in India, where demand consistently outstrips supply, resulting in a staggering number of deaths annually due to organ failure. “Cadaveric donations are crucial in bridging this gap,” Dr. Chaudhry stated, highlighting the potential of a single donor to save up to eight lives.

“We salute the spirit of Atharva’s parents and relatives, who in the depths of their sorrow, found the strength to make this selfless decision,” remarked  Dr. Aashish Chaudhry, paying tribute to the family’s courage and compassion.
