Raids in Cuttack med shops over illegal sale of abortion kits

Cuttack:  A day after conducting raids in Bhubaneswar, Odisha Drugs Control Department on Tuesday launched a crackdown over illegal sale of abortion kits in Cuttack and found two shops violating the rules in the city.

Acting on reports of unauthorised sales of abortion kits, a three-member team raided medicine stores in Ranihat area, a location close to SCB Medical College and Hospital. Another raid was conducted in Badambadi area.

“We examined the sales and stock reports of all involved stores. During the raid, two shops have been identified, one at Ranihat and another in Badambadi area, for illegal possession and selling (of abortion kits) without doctor’s prescription, while voolating drug control rules,” said D Puhan, assistant drug controller, Cuttack.

“Such vital drugs should only be taken under a doctor’s supervision. Selling it without a prescription is illegal and poses serious health risks. Many shops have been selling this, and we have received several complaints. This raid is just the beginning,” he added.
