Two held with meds worth Rs 80 lakh at IGI

New Delhi: Two international passengers were apprehended for allegedly carrying medicines worth Rs 80 lakh at IGI Airport in New Delhi, an official statement issued by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) said on Tuesday.

CISF said that the images of the bags after their screening raised suspicion and a physical check was done further, which led to the seizure of medicines.

“On screening their four trolley bags through the X-BIS machine, CISF personnel noticed suspicious images. On physical checking, a huge quantity of medicines of approximate value Rs 80 lakh were detected,” CISF said.

“On inquiry, the passengers could not produce supporting documents for carrying such huge quantity of medicines,” the CISF added.

Government ropes in CISF for security of Parliament complex
The government has decided to hand over the comprehensive security of the Parliament building complex to the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) in the wake of the recent breach of the safety ring. The CISF, a central armed police force, already guards many central government ministry buildings in Delhi along with installations in the nuclear and aerospace domain, civil airports, and the Delhi Metro. The Union home ministry has directed for a survey of the Parliament building complex to enable regular deployment of CISF security and fire wing. The survey will be conducted by experts from the CISF and current Parliament security team.
After breach, CISF may be part of Parliament security
CISF, known for its expertise in access control and security, may join the Parliament security setup. The MHA has given in-principle approval for a joint survey of Parliament premises by CISF to assess security facilities and develop a comprehensive plan. The final approval will come from the Lok Sabha secretariat. It is unclear if CISF will replace existing security agencies, but it is seen as the most competent force for access control and screening. If deployed, CISF personnel will be on deputation to the Lok Sabha secretariat.
