Expired medicines: 2 hospitals barred from PM-JAY

Gandhinagar:  The state health department has suspended the licences of two private hospitals empanelled with the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY) and has issued notices to two others for irregularities.

Lack of facilities for PICU (paediatric ICU) and NICU (neonatal ICU), absence of MBBS doctors, recovery of Expired Medicines, unqualified nursing staff, non-compliance with infection control guidelines, and absence of BU permission and fire safety NOC were the reasons for suspending and issuing show-cause notices to the hospitals.

The hospitals suspended from PMJAY-MA empanelment are Deep Children Hospital and Neonatal Care in Godhra, and Kashima Hospital in Bharuch.

The hospitals issued show-cause notices are Maa Children and General Hospital in Kalol, Panchmahal, and Maa Children and Neonatal Care in Devgadh Baria, Dahod. The action follows surprise raids by state health department officials on hospitals in Panchmahal, Bharuch, and Dahod districts under the directions of health minister Praful Pansheriya.

The health minister said, “The state govt is continuously striving to make health services more efficient, transparent, and welfare-oriented. The PMJAY-MA scheme is a blessing for the poor and needy citizens, and any kind of irregularity or negligence will not be tolerated.”

The minister added, “In the future, the state govt will take the strictest measures against hospitals that are found flouting norms.”

After the Khyati hospital incident, the state govt has been conducting surprise checks on private hospitals that were empanelled with the govt for implementing  PM-JAY. In 2024, alleged unnecessary angioplasty surgeries under the scheme at Khyati Hospital in Ahmedabad led to the death of two patients.
